So, i’ve been waiting for the non Jailbroken version of Qik for the iPhone, and now that it’s finally here, man am I disappointed. Not to fault the software maker at all, but really… it’s not what I was waiting for.
First off, the big draw for Qik is the live video streaming functionality. Posting recorded clips is no big deal. Qik’s trying to work within Apple’s restrictions and have some up with something that at least makes it to the App Store.
The whole Google Voice debate is heating up with the FCC, so Apple better be careful. I’m a fanboy and all that, but I don’t mind havin’ my cake and eatin’ it too. So the issue with Qik as I see it is multi-fold. For one, it is likely something they don’t want running over the AT&T 3G network, but WiFi should have been allowed. Then, I suspect the live video streaming is going to kill the battery and overheat the little bastard. So that may be why Apple doesn’t want to promote live video streaming. Is it possible that Apple has something up their sleeve that could directly compete with Qik? I wouldn’t put it past them. But if that is the case, here’s my take on it. Apple should define the boundaries that App developers will not cross, but then if the developer respects the boundaries, then the app should be approved. I don’t think people can easily out-do Apple’s product design or software, so let them compete and beat them at it head-on. I would like to see that more so than not having functionality that I know my phone is capable of.
Anyway, my spankin’ new white iPhone 3GS definitely makes me feel like I should have upgraded when the bad boy came out. I waited too long. Just the performance improvement alone are huge.
Next up for me is the navigation software… but for now, I want Qik to work as designed. Should I Jailbreak this one?
